Příčinou je obv. onemocnění štítné žlázy (primární h.) na autoimunitním podkladě - Gravesova-Basedowova nemoc, vzácněji nádor (tzv. toxický adenom), ev. nadprodukce TSH (sekundární h.). Příznaky choroby vyplývají z účinku hormonů (thyroxinu, trijodthyroninu) na celý organismus, částečně závisejí i na příčině (některé další autoimunitní projevy). Pacienti nesnášejí teplo, hubnou, mají jemný třes rukou, zrychlenou a někdy nepravidelnou srdeční činnost, lesklé, někdy až vystouplé oči (exoftalmus), teplou vlhkou kůži, průjmy, trpí svalovou slabostí a někdy i psychickými poruchami. Štítná žláza je obv. mírně zvětšena. Jde o nejčastější onemocnění žláz s vnitřní sekrecí po diabetu. V léčbě se podávají tyreostatika. Někdy je nutné přistoupit po pečlivé přípravě (např. jodem) k chirurgické léčbě (subtotální strumektomii), ev. použití radiojodu. Užívá se též názvu tyreotoxikóza. (cit.
